RMES#5 Boundaries to be decided this month!

As hopefully most of you know, a new elementary school is under construction in the Richard Montgomery cluster (i.e., near you), and is due to open next August.  Children starting grades K-4 in the fall will be affected by the new school's opening.  MCPS has been engaged in a yearlong process of Committee and planning meetings to determine the boundary changes for all the schools in the RM cluster: College Gardens, Ritchie Park, Beall, Twinbrook, and now RMES#5. The Committee made its report, the PTAs of the existing local schools sent in their opinions, public meetings were held, and public comments were accepted.  The next step was for the Superintendent of Schools Jack Smith to make his recommendation to the Board of Education. He published his recommendations on October 23, 2017.  His recommendation was different from any of the 8 previously considered options. The Board of Education is slated to vote on the new school's boundaries on November 27th.  The Mayor and Council of Rockville met with the BOE to discuss issues and concerns on October 30th. At its work session on Nov 2nd, the BOE requested the Superintendent's office to explore further options. You can read the documents here  There will be public hearings at the BOE Carver Auditorium on Nov 6 at 6:30 pm, Nov 8 at 6:30 pm, and Nov 16 at 6:30 pm.

Even if your particular house is not within the moving zone, your child will feel the change next year.  It is our responsibility to advocate for the best possible educational opportunities not only for our own children, but for our neighbors' children as well.  It is our collective responsibility to advocate to give the new school the best possible chance for success.

We STRONGLY encourage you to get involved, talk to and mobilize your neighbors, write to the Board of Education at [email protected]

Contact Rockville's Mayor and Council, the Superintendent of Schools, and your local elected representatives.  Plan to attend the Board's public hearings on Facilities and Boundaries on November 6th, 8th, and 16th
