Hello Dragon Families! May the Fourth be with you on this beautiful spring day!

It's hard to believe we are down to the final six weeks of the school year. We have a lot of fun planned to wrap up the school year, starting with Staff Appreciation Week (which begins tomorrow!) and Thursday's Food Truck Night, followed by lots of other great things, such as a Talk to Me First workshop, the Beall Read-a-thon, and the always awesome kid-favorite, the Beall End of Year school picnic.  Please note that there is NOT a PTA meeting this week; the next PTA meeting is on June 3rd, when we will have the officer election and volunteer appreciation party. Come on out and celebrate with us!

Please take a few minutes to read up on some highlights of what’s been going on at Beall this past month, and more details about what's to come in May!

Also, the PTA would like your feedback about after-school activities - please let us know what classes your children have particularly enjoyed, or if you have encountered any issues, etc. Comments can be sent to [email protected].

Staff Appreciation Week

Monday, May 05, 2014 at 09:00 AM
Beall Elementary School in Rockville, MD

Let's get started!  Have your child make a poster/sign/card to hang that says 'thanks' in your own creative way. Please turn them into the collection box in the main office by Mondaymorning 5/5.

Think about your favorite Beall Dragon.  Is it your teacher?  Another professional in the school?  We bet you have a few!

  1. Wednesday 5/7 - bring your favorite Dragon(s) a piece of fruit. There will be reusable bags to collect the fruit
  2. Thursday 5/8 - bring a flower for your favorite Dragon(s). Either pick one from your garden, cut from a tree, or purchase. There will be vases for the flowers.
  3. Friday 5/9 - email a card of thanks to your favorite Dragon(s).  Using a free online provider is just fine.

And again, please consider donating a gift card.  We will be raffling them off to the staff for a little extra thank you!  There will be an envelope in the main office all this week and next week for collection.  Any value is appreciated!

Nationally acclaimed educator and author of Sex and Sensibility and Talk to Me First, Deborah Roffman distills her more than thirty years of experience teaching kids—and their parents—into this incredibly helpful workshop, helping you to be your kids’ number one source for information and guidance on human sexuality. Roffman will engage you from developmental stages to strategies for handling embarrassing or difficult conversations, offering the best ways to make sure you both keep talking (and listening).

Deborah Roffman’s work on childhood and teen sexuality has been featured in numerous publications, including the Washington Post and USA Today. A recipient of the Mary Lee Tatum Apple Award from Planned Parenthood Federation of America, she has also been recognized by the National Federation of Republican Women. The mother of two grown sons, she lives with her husband in Baltimore, Maryland.

This info is adapted from Ms. Roffman's website

This two-hour workshop was presented last two years by Beall PTA and it was incredibly well received! It's HIGHLY recommended!

You MUST reserve your space IN ADVANCE for this workshop by buying a ticket online. Please use the "purchase ticket" button below, then it will bring you to the "donation" page. You will receive an email confirmation/receipt after you pay. Thank you!

Read-a-thon Kick Off

Monday, May 19, 2014 at 09:00 AM
Beall Elementary School in Rockville, MD

The Beall Read-a-thon is back for 2014!
May 12th - June 1st

Students are invited to participate in our second annual read-a-thon to promote literacy and a lifelong love of reading. Students can enter to win some fabulous prizes by competing for the most minutes read by grade, class and individual student.

The Read-a-thon is a way to help our students become better readers and have fun doing it.  From May 19 - June 6, students will log the number of minutes they spend reading per week and have their logs initialed by a parent.  Those logs will be collected weekly and minutes submitted for a contest to win fun prizes, including pizza parties, Bella t-shirts, and even a Kindle Fire HDX! In addition, school wide numbers could persuade some Beall staff members to perform some embarrassing stunts at our end-of-the-year picnic.  Stay tuned for details!

Expect more information in backpack mail next week and be prepared to cheer on your little reader!

Check out the Dragon on the bulletin board across the hall from the APR to see who are our book worms!
