How are we doing?

In order for the PTA Board to do a better job serving our Dragon community, please take less than 5 minutes to answer the following questions. We greatly appreciate your feedback! Names of responders will be kept confidential but you may check below if you want to have your responses displayed on the website or not. By filling out a survey, your name will be entered to win a drawing for a $25 gift certificate to Mamma Lucia. Last day to respond and be entered into the raffle is January 15, 2013.

The PTA has provided services such as communications (such as Dragon Dateline Newsletter, Fridge Notes, the listserv & eblasts), workshops (such as Race to Nowhere, Sexuality communications), community events (such picnics, Dragon Men workshops, dance/sock hop), support the school's staff (gifts, social/food events, Staff Appreciation Week and financial reimbursements for classroom related supplies), raise funds for the school to cover for items that MCPS do not have money to pay for (Mixed Bags, Dine Out and Book Fair) and many other important events and issues such as advocacy with the Board of Education, hold a Science Expo, maintain the Butterfly Garden, create a school directory and yearbook, coordinate after school classes (Legos, Mad Science, sports), etc. We want to know what you think is worthwhile and important.

We appreciate your time!

Anything else that you want to tell Beall PTA? Compliments are welcomed!

Q: What do you see as the top three items that Beall PTA should focus on? They might be community events (Autumn Picnic, Movie Night, Dance, etc), advocacy such as letting the community know about City Council hearings, fundraising (Mixed Bag, Dine Out or Book Fair), liaison with the school (Coffee with Mr. Alter), providing workshops (Race to Nowhere, Sexuality Communication, Positive Discipline), creating a school directory, Spirit Gear, communications (bulletin boards, newsletter, Fridge Notes), etc.
A: 1. Liason with the school (enjoy the coffee with Mr. Alter)/helping the school to improve communication 2. Community Events 3. School Directory/Providing workshops

Q: What do you think of the Science Expo? How can we improve?
A: We have never done a progect, but did check out the science expo last year. It was neat to see the kids projects. I do think it would be great to have the classrooms check out the projects during the day.

Q: If you went to the dance (Sock Hop) this year, what did you think of it? Please be descriptive so that we can use this info to improve the dance next year.
A: I think it is nice for kids that like to dance. The DJ definitely tried to get kids involved. I was surprised at how many younger kids were there as I figured more older kids would be there. It was too loud for my kids, so they unfortunately did not want to stay. I’m not sure if having some activities (crafts, games) in another area would be good, or if just want to make it strictly a sock-hop. The darkness factor can scare some of the younger kids. Having a movie in another area/classroom might help with some of the siblings that aren’t having fun.

Q: If you went to the autumn (Back to Schoo) Picnic, did you think it served its purpose of bringing the community together? How can we improve it?
A: I think it is nice, it just gets dark so early. I think maybe having some different activities stations for kids to do, or events in the gym. Of course that requires more volunteers too.

Q: What was your favorite workshop or what would you like a workshop on?
A: Race to Nowhere, hearing from the Beall special teachers about what they do. A topic that I would enjoy:dealing with kids behavior (PEP has some good programs). The “Upside Down Organization” via Children’s Guild has given some very interesting talks to schools and parents regarding children and learning.

Q: Do you think that the PTA should continue to have workshops? In the past couple of years we cover positive discipline, Race to Nowhere, sexuality communication, college savings account, Beall specialists.
A: yes

A: no

Q: Of all the fundraisers you have seen and/or heard about from other schools or friends, what would you like to see Beall PTA do for the next fundraiser?
A: The mixed bag was a fun new one to try. I have seen other schools do the magazine fundraiser with a really good discount on magazines, I think that would be good. Auctions, I know that is a big undertaking. Even a parent event night(some type of dinner at school, casino night-not sure if public schools allow that). Art/Craft fair.

Q: So far this year the PTA has asked for you to spend money on events and activities. Not all of them are fundraisers. PTA fundraisers included the Mixed Bag, Book Fair and Parents Night Out. Do you think that is a good amount of fundraisers?
A: Just the right amount

Q: How can Beall PTA include more Dragon community members?
A: Continue reaching out. I love the e-mail updates we get. I think the PTA hs really done alot to try to reach out the last couple of years. Maybe teachers could reach out to parents more in an e-mail or newsletter to encourage PTA membership.

Q: What do you think is the ONE event that the PTA does best to support the school's staff?
A: Annual reimbursement of up to $100 for PTA members

Q: What else can the PTA do to support the school's staff?
A: I think the PTA has done alot for the school. I was amazed at how much money was donated by the PTA to purchase some very big-ticket items for the school for this year. Maybe helping to coordinate various activities for field day and providing the snack at the end of field day, as last year I don’t think there was anything other than water given out. Continue to emphasize getting help during lunch/recess. Seeing if the teachers want more organized fun activities during park day at Welsh Park, it would take more volunteers for planning purposes to do this. Also, if teachers or the whole school is looking to do more fun-learning activities which requires more help during the school year, letting them know that we can assist. For example: This year kindergarten made gingerbread houses, maybe more classes could do this with support. I thought that was a great fun project!

Q: What would you like see added to Staff Appreciation Week or how would you like to see it done differently?
A: I think it seems well organized. I like how there are different suggestions that kids can do for their teacher each day.
